In any given round, you take roughly 40 percent of your shots on the green. That’s right — you use your putter more than any other club in the bag. So you have every reason to make sure it’s properly fitted for you and your stroke. Yet chances are good that you’ve never even considered taking that extra step.
The putter fitting process, which takes one hour or less, will shave strokes off your score in a flash. Club Champion uses state-of-the-art Science and Motion PuttLab technology, to accomplish the feat. Its software measures your current putter for loft, lie and length, then analyzes many parameters of your putter and stroke path to suggest some better-fitting models for your unique stroke. "We often hear back from customers we fitted, and it's not uncommon for them to chop three-to-five strokes off their 18-hole score with a new fitted putter,” says Nick Sherburne, founder of Club Champion.
Until you’re fitted, you may never know how many strokes you’re needlessly adding every round. For instance, when you get fitted, you may well find out that your putter has the wrong toe hang for your unique stroke — that's the single-most important characteristic of a putter that doesn't match up with a golfer's stroke, and it affects how the head rotates and squares up at impact. “It's what we see as the most important part of choosing the right putter, yet most golfers have it wrong,” says Sherburne. There are essentially two categories of putters. Face balanced models are ideal for golfers who take a straight back-and-through stroke, while toe hang models better suit those who arc the putter open-and-closed during the stroke. The more arc your stroke has, the more toe hang you need to help square the putter face at impact.
Other ill-fitting aspects of your current putter are likely the weighting, which leads to inconsistent impact and distance control, and loft, which can cause less-than-solid impact and thus an off-line roll. Your putter shaft length can also be off, or the grip size. And it’s even possible that the alignment aid on the crown doesn’t look right to your eyes.
Whatever the issue, experts agree that there's at least one putter out there which fixes all of those issues for you — without you having to change anything about your putting stroke. In fact, Sherburne says that many golfers aren't even aware that every different mallet or blade on the market is best-suited for specific types of strokes. "But that's what great about our system — between our fitters and technology, we can show and educate you on all of the various putters and why your putter, stroke and body make-up lend to a very specific putter style that allows you to make more putts. Once you try that right putter, you can instantly feel the difference and see results."
Sherburne is convinced that getting fitted for the proper putter is “truly the fastest way to lowering your scores. Within 30 minutes to an hour, you'll be making more one-putts and reducing the chances of three-putts. It will convince you how important putter fitting is for your game.”
