Go The Distance With New M5 & M6 Irons

TaylorMade’s M5 and M6 irons are both designed to produce greater distance. The M5 has a trimmer, smaller head and the M6 boasts slightly stronger lofts.

Both models feature a fluted hosel, thin faces and a 360-degree undercut-cavity which helps lower the center of gravity. Both irons boast a stiffer outer structure, which TaylorMade says produces higher ball speeds because of a better energy transfer at impact. Its taller Hybrar material dampens the vibration, producing a more pleasant sound. Essential to both versions is a “Speed Bridge”— tying the topline to the back bar using a structural beam that allowed the company’s designers to produce their most flexible sole slot to date.

The difference? The M5 is designed for the lower handicap golfer while the M6 targets the more casual player. M5 fuses heavier tungsten into its lower, outer toe section of the 3-iron through 7-iron, which delivers added forgiveness for its shorter blade length. It shifts the CG lower and closer to the center of the face. The leading edge area features a redesigned chamfer or sloping edge that provides a clean look at address. The M6 is designed to deliver a higher launch. Critical to that higher launch is a cut-through slot which increases ball speed on low-face contact.

“Some golfers find comfort in looking down at a larger iron with some offset,” says Matt Bovee, TaylorMade’s senior manager of product creation. “They feel like they can hit it straighter. Other golfers don’t like that look, which is why we offer both.”
