Most putting strokes are inconsistent, yet most putting technologies focus on improving alignment or the quality of the roll. This seems like an an attempt to mask a given stroke’s weaknesses, instead of addressing them. Breaking the norm, the new Odyssey Stroke Lab line of putters incorporates a novel method of weight distribution designed to improve the physical dynamics of the stroke. This is made possible by an innovative new shaft, and improvement metrics are based on comparison testing versus an Odyssey #7 putter.
The Stroke Lab shaft is a full 40 grams lighter than a standard Odyssey steel putter shaft. An innovative new multi-material shaft design combines a graphite body with a steel tip to net out at just 75g, with most of the mass concentrated in the tip. Weight is redistributed by adding 10g to the head in the form of two sole weights and 30g to the grip-end via a 10g-lighter grip and 40g end-weight. It is slightly stiffer and lower torque compared to standard putter shafts to better control a slightly heavier head.
Odyssey studies indicate the effect of the updated weight distribution on the stroke is dramatic.
Improvements are found in the consistency of backswing time, face angle at impact, plus ball speed and direction. Feel for the putter head becomes more sensitive, helping golfers more consistently repeat the same smoother stroke. The Stroke Lab lineup consists of 10 distinguished shapes - six mallets and four blades, all featuring the latest White Hot Microhinges embedded across the face to promote topspin, great feel and more consistent distance control.
“You feel the difference immediately," said Luke Williams, senior director of putter marketing at Odyssey. "The putter head moves freely, smoothly and on a sound path, helping you roll the ball accurately while giving you greater speed-control.”
