EPON Golf recently unveiled the brand new AF-706 irons, now available to demo in all Club Champion locations. This iron family was designed to appeal to a broader audience than seen in the past. Typically, the 7 series hangs around the UGI (Ultra Game Improvement) player profile spectrum, but this new model will have plenty of appeal for the serious game improvement shopper as well. The Japan-based EPON design team set out some pretty basic goals when considering objectives: distance and forgiveness. The aesthetic is also more appealing to a wider range of golfers, with a nice top line (not too chunky) and a compact look.

The new 706 offers a hollow body construction versus the pocket cavity from the previous 705 model. That design element combined with a thinner 1.9mm “spring steel” face is meant to provide plenty of additional ball speed (nine yards farther in robot testing) compared to its predecessor. Additional features include slightly stronger lofts and a 15% deeper CG. Add it all up and there is a substantial increase in the sweet spot of 30% — meaning added forgiveness on the occasional off-center hit. Essentially, there is no comparison! Here is a YouTube video detailing more about the testing process.
