Have you considered PXG irons, but either couldn’t or wouldn’t pay the freight? For years, many golfers have longed for PXG’s technology in a more affordable, high-performance club. The new PXG 0211 irons might just be what those people have been looking for.
Why are PXG’s 0211 irons less expensive than the 0311s? Because they cost less to make. For starters, 0311 irons are triple-forged and feature proprietary perimeter weighting technology. Also factoring into the price is that the 0311 irons are available in four different head types. The 0211s come in just one high-performance clubhead and are cast as opposed to forged.
What’s the difference between forged and cast construction? Forging is a process by which metal is formed utilizing compressive forces. This process yields a tight metallic grain structure, supporting an exceptional sound and feel. It also strengthens the resulting steel product. Given the underlying expense to produce a forged product, it’s often associated with best-in-class golf clubs.
Casting—and in the case of PXG 0211 irons, investment casting—is a process where metal is heated until molten and then poured into a mold. It’s an efficient process for creating complex geometries. The potential drawback is that it creates clubs that don’t necessarily offer an ideal sound and feel. PXG 0311 irons are forged from 8620 soft carbon steel while the 0211s are investment cast from 431 stainless steel and feature a chrome finish.
0211s feature a large hollow body cavity filled with a proprietary COR2 material. Both models boast a super thin face, supported and activated by the COR2 material and enhanced by a 360-degree internal face cut out design. The reason PXG believes the performance is so close is because their GEN2 technologies are exemplified in their 0211s.
The cost of PXG’s tungsten and titanium perimeter weighting is significant. While this proprietary weighting plays a critical role in the overall performance and forgiveness of the 0311 irons, they’ve been removed from the 0211s to manage the cost. However, the 0211 club heads have been optimized to support excellent launch conditions and performance.
Like all PXG product naming, 0211 is a United States Marine Corps military code. In this case, it denotes counter and human intelligence specialists. 0211s spend their time undercover and obtain information that is vital to the planning and mission of air, ground and special operations troops.
